The Okie family, which founded Sheepscot River Pottery more than 50 years ago, is selling its longtime Edgecomb home, and the business is staying open. Tranzon Auction Properties has announced that the property at 34 US-1 will be offered at online auction, with bidding from Dec. 3 to Dec. 10 at www.tranzon.com/ap26070. Property tours are available by appointment.

Just across the Sheepscot River from Wiscasset, the property has long been a recognizable part of the Midcoast landscape. About 15,750 vehicles passing through this stretch of Route One daily according to Maine Department of Transportation's 2024 traffic count.

"Family-owned businesses are truly the heart of Maine's communities," said Mike Carey, co-CEO of Tranzon Auction Properties. "The Okie family has built something special over more than 50 years, and their decision reflects thoughtful planning for the future. This isn't a story about a business struggling or closing its doors. It's about a successful family business making the right decisions for the next generation. We're proud to help them take this next step while creating an opportunity for someone new to make this property their own."

While the property at 34 US-1 prepares for its next owner, the heart of Sheepscot River Pottery remains unchanged: a commitment to family, craftsmanship, and the Maine community that has supported the business for generations. For the Okie family, the address may change, but the tradition continues.

Founded more than 52 years ago by the Okie family, Sheepscot River Pottery has grown into a beloved Maine business. What began as a family dream became a lasting tradition, welcoming customers who returned year after year and introducing new generations to the beauty of handcrafted Maine pottery.

For the Okie family, the decision to sell the property is about making thoughtful changes to ensure its future. Sheepscot River Pottery remains a healthy, operating, family-owned business. The family has simply made the decision to optimize its real estate, right-size for its needs while continuing the tradition and legacy that began more than five decades ago.

"My parents started this business more than 50 years ago, and it's incredibly special to be able to carry on something they worked so hard to build," said Rylan Okie. "Sheepscot River Pottery has always been about family, community, and creating something meaningful. As we look toward the future, we're making thoughtful decisions that allow us to continue doing what we love while preserving the legacy my parents started. This isn't goodbye. It's simply the beginning of a new chapter."

Now as the family looks to the future, they're focusing on evolving the business, finalizing new studio options and using their Damariscotta store as the primary retail location. "As we look forward to the 2027 season, we are honored to continue as part of the small family-owned businesses in our beautiful state, in the community we love," said Rylan Okie. The Edgecomb studio will produce pottery orders and will continue to operate until a sale is finalized. They continue to bring art and community to Midcoast Maine and beyond.
